Wreak Havoc! - Can you raed tihs?

Can You Raed Tihs was developed to help you explore the interesting phenomenon that people do not look at a word one letter at a time but at the word as a whole. If the first and last letters are left unchanged, the middle letters can be "scrambled" without making the word much more difficult to read.

Early Reading For Older Students

Spinout Stories - Blue Pack

The Spinout Stories CDs, and associated books, have been specifically designed to promote literacy among older students, in the upper primary and early secondary years, who have reading difficulties.

Two packs are currently available - Red and Blue. Each pack contains a CD-ROM with four stories on high-interest age related topics such as building sites, diesel engines, surfing, crocodiles, gorillas and dreaming. The blue pack contains The Best Mechanic, Diesels and Dirt, Reptile Zoo and Saltwater Crocodiles. In addition to the CDs the hardest levels of the stories can also be purchased separately in book form, to further support the use of the software.

Each Spinout Story has three different reading levels, of which the hardest has optional hypertext links to further information at an even higher reading level. There is also a Teacher's Guide and a set of printable worksheets. The software includes teacher controls, optional tracking facilities to monitor students' progress, extension activities related to the text, and a worksheet generator.

OED December 2004 Newsletter

December 2004 Newsletter
http://oed.com/newsletters/2004-12/
Jemma Best, Newsletter Editor and Senior Assistant Editor, OED

The OED staff is mainly composed of many editors and researchers, and OED News often focuses on aspects of their work. This issue, however, contains articles written by two people in more unusual roles.

Beverley Hunt reflects on her first year as the OED Archivist, a position which requires her to engage with the OED's past and present, and also to prepare for its future.

Abigail Reynolds was the OED Artist in Residence for the academic year 2003-4, during which time she spent two days each week working alongside lexicographers in the OED offices. Here, she describes how the residency, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, inspired her work The Frozen Sea.

This issue of OED News is my first as editor. I'd like to thank Peter Gilliver, who has been such an excellent editor and contributor over the past three years. Peter will be a hard act to follow!

Soliloquy Reading Assistant

http://www.reading-assistant.com/index.htm

The Electronic Reading Assistant for Improving Reading Fluency

Soliloquy Reading Assistant works like a classroom reading aide—reading stories aloud to model fluency and listening as the student reads aloud. Using speech recognition technology, it provides intervention when the student struggles and gives help with pronunciations and word meanings. Soliloquy Reading Assistant provides teachers with a valuable tool that allows students to practice oral reading independently—effectively, efficiently, and economically.

Soliloquy Reading Assistant is one of the few software products that directly addresses the fluency standard in Reading First, the national initiative in the No Child Left Behind Act that aims to enable all students to become successful early readers

Free Culture online and to take away

Lessig's new book, Free Culture is available online as a gratis, Creative-Commons-licensed file, under terms that allow for the creation of derivative works.

AKMA has proposed a hell of a derivative work: he's inviting any blogger who cares to to read a chapter aloud, recording it and posting it, so that a distributed audiobook of the book will be produced. I may take a crack at a chapter myself this week.
Heck, we could have duelling chapters; which version of chapter 5 do you like, Accordion Guy’s or Jenny the Shifted Librarian’s? (Disclaimer: I just typed their names in there. They haven’t offered or anything. Yet.) (Another disclaimer: When I went to Jenny’s just now to get her link, I saw that she had the same idea — and we didn’t even talk about it Wednesday night!)

A supplement to every library catalogue on the planet

http://www.freefulltext.com/
FreeFullText.com provides direct links to over 7000 scholarly periodicals which allow some or all of their online content to be viewed by ANYONE with Internet access for free (though some may require free registration). The issue(s) which are available for free are indicated for each title on the alphabetical periodical lists. The design of this site is optimized for users seeking specific articles for which they already have the citation. If some of the articles you need are not available for free online, you may obtain them for a fee through a document delivery service, such as Pinpoint Documents. If you wish to "search" for articles on a particular topic, please use a bibliographic database such as PubMed. This site does not attempt to list ALL periodicals on the Internet, only those which offer free full-text content. Titles will be removed from this list if they cease to offer any free full-text content.

A more detailed description of this site is available in the FAQ list.

Just In Tokyo, a cheap, handy, printed guide to Tokyo. The print edition is no longer for sale; though you can look at all the hype here.

Enjoy the September 2002 version - download 750k pdf. Most of the material is about adjusting to Japan, less about specific restaurants to eat in. It's an overview experience.
