Moviemaking for the Language Acquisition Classroom

http://www.techlearning.com/story/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=0BYCF4TAJ5QQCQSNDBCCKHY?articleID=18700328
As technology becomes more widely available in language classrooms, opportunities to address multiple intelligences increase. For the visual spatial intelligence, students can be encouraged to create mental pictures, develop strategies for reading, interpret and create maps, graphs and other diagrams, create craft and art projects, and make comparisons of artifacts from various cultures. Bodily kinesthetic intelligence can be addressed through role-playing, folk dancing, drama, and total physical response. Musical rhythmic youngsters can be encouraged to write and sing songs and to remember information through music. Music can also be used to stimulate creativity.

ERIC on life support.

http://www.eric.ed.gov
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a five-year, $34.6 million contract to Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) of Rockville, Md., along with its subcontractors, to develop and operate a new database system for the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC). The ERIC database will use the latest search and retrieval methods to cull education literature and give high-quality access to educators, researchers, and the general public.

The ERIC database is the world's largest education database. Begun in 1966, it is composed of more than one million bibliographic records. The goal of the new ERIC is to provide more education materials quicker, and more directly, to audiences through the Internet.

With the new ERIC, individuals will be able to go to one Web site to search a comprehensive database of journal articles and document abstracts and descriptions and, for the first time, directly access full text. The database will include as much free full text as possible, and links will be provided to commercial sources so that individuals can purchase journal articles and other full text immediately.
....
During the development and transition to the new ERIC, the ERIC database will continue to be available at http://www.eric.ed.gov, and materials selected in 2003 will continue to be added. Until the new model is operational in 2004, no new materials will be accepted for the database. The department will post updated information about the transition on the ERIC Web site and will contact publishers, education organizations, and other database contributors when the new model is ready to begin adding journal articles and other materials this year.

Effective Security Practices Guide

http://www.educause.edu/security/guide
Balancing the Need for Security and Open, Collaborative Networking
This resource is being created to provide practical approaches to preventing, detecting, and responding to security problems in a wide range of higher education environments. This online service is designed with colleges and universities in mind, balancing our need for security with the need for an open, collaborative networking environment. Also, because one of the overarching concerns in college and university information technology (IT) departments is a lack of resources, an effort is made to provide low-cost solutions. The target audiences are those responsible for information security in colleges and universities and information technology staff who implement and manage security measures. Recognizing that many institutions have initiated or are in the process of developing IT security programs and policies, an effort is made throughout this resource to present practices that are useful at each stage of the developmental process.

Laptops for teachers

With so much news coming from the States these days about students in public schools getting laptops, I've often wondered about the teachers. Do they get laptops and perhaps more importantly, training? In my rather miniscule view of the EFL market, things are coming along but still far behind.

Well nevermind, the article" Afghan teachers arrive to study in Omaha; Fulbright scholars to follow" reminded me of this.
The first group of female teachers participating in the Afghan Teacher Education Project arrived in Omaha on Oct. 29 to begin a six-week training program in the United States.

Twelve teachers arrived with the group. Two more groups are expected in March and May.

The project, which is funded by a special grant from the Fulbright Program, is run by UNO's Center for Afghanistan Studies. The participants will live with families in Omaha and take English language and teaching methodology classes as well as computer courses, said A. Raheem Yaseer, assistant director of the Center for Afghanistan Studies.

"They are all English teachers, but their level of English is not very high," Yaseer said. The teachers will be provided with a laptop and learn how to use the Internet, e-mail and various programs.
